Filmmaking in nontraditional media

One-day symposium organised by Piet Zwart Institute & Creating 010, Hogeschool Rotterdam

In collaboration with Signals: For Real, International Film Festival Rotterdam

While the traditional media for moving images – movie theaters and TV – are losing their dominant role, filmmaking and the language of cinema migrate to other media that often aren’t screens. This symposium gathers filmmakers, artists, designers and activists who reframe cinema as interventions into public space through visual, sound and mobile media, as tactical transmedia narratives, and as filmmaking rooted in the avant-garde expanded cinema tradition. What does the language of cinema contribute to these other media, and which opportunities do these media conversely offer for the future practice of filmmaking?

Steeds meer hedendaagse ontwerpers verkennen de mogelijkheden van digitale technologie bij het proces en de productie van hun werk. Kenmerkend hierbij is de multidisciplinaire aanpak: grafisch design naast webdesign en installaties. Het predikaat Dutch Digital Design wordt nu zelfs al toegekend aan het werk van verschillende digitaal opererende ontwerpers. Maar bestaat er wel zoiets als Dutch Digital Design? En hoe geven deze ontwerpers hier invulling aan?

Is de hedendaagse kunst veranderd door het internet? Zo ja, waar is dat aan te zien, op welke wijze is het veranderd? MAMA en de WdKA organiseren een avond over de invloed van het internet op hedendaagse kunst. Diverse sprekers lichten hun visie toe op basis van hun eigen praktijk en gaan met elkaar en het publiek in gesprek. Deze avond is georganiseerd naar aanleiding van Brad Troemels solotentoonstelling The Social Life Of Things in Showroom MAMA van 5 november tot 23 december. Het centrale thema van deze tentoonstelling is hoe informatie en objecten worden verspreid binnen netwerken van personen op internet en in real life en wat hiervan de gevolgen zijn.

MAMA and WDKA present an evening examining the impact of the Internet on contemporary art. Has the Internet changed contemporary art? If so, how has it changed and where is it visible? Several speakers shall present their views, their work, and answer questions from the audience. This evening has been organised in response to Brad Troemel’s solo exhibition The Social Life of Things, at Showroom MAMA from November 5 – December 23. The exhibition’s central theme looks at how information and objects are distributed among networks of people on the Internet and in the real world, and what are the subsequent consequences of this distribution.

CrossLab is trots op haar druk bezochte stand  op de Dutch Design Week.

Naast werk van de recentelijk afgestudeerde bachelorstudenten Dennis Vedder, Koen Harmsma, Marjolein Stormezand en Giselle Segura Gelink is er een interactieve installatie te zien. Uitgangspunt van de installatie is een ‘XXL scanner’ met een oppervlak van 2×2m, waarboven een camera is bevestigd. De scanner is ontwikkeld door Jannetje in ‘t Veld en Toon Koehorst, beiden als docent CrossLab Grafisch Ontwerpen verbonden aan de academie. De installatie maakt instant digitale affiches doordat de foto’s staand worden geprojecteerd. De beelden zijn ‘realtime’ op een groot scherm te zien. Ook worden de fotos automatisch gekopieerd naar de CrossLab Server, zodat je zowel lokaal als op afstand live het ontwerpproces kan volgen.

Naast Jannetje in ‘t Veld en Toon Koehorst, veel dank aan Corinne Lamby en Eva Neirynck, studenten aan de master opleiding Interior Architecture and Retail Design van het Piet Zwart Instituut, die het ontwerp van de scanner en stand hebben gedaan, Raymond Molendijk voor zijn bijdrage aan het bouwen van de installatie en stand. Brigit Lichtenegger voor de technische en digitale produktie van de scanner, Aldje van Meer en Monique van der Salm voor het coordineren van het project en natuurlijk alle docenten en studenten die met de scanner aan het werk gaan!

De stand van de academie is nog te zien tot en met 30 oktober in het klokgebouw in Eindhoven.

Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe is a new initiative that aims to support collaborative artistic projects in the framework of the Asia-Europe dialogue. Artists, cultural workers, arts organisations and arts networks of Asia and Europe are invited to apply.

Arts Network Asia (ANA) and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), in collaboration with the European network Trans Europe Halles, will jointly promote this initiative for projects taking place between November 2011 and November 2012.

ANA and ASEF have maintained active roles in fostering connectivity and engagement across cultures through artistic collaborations, exchanges and dialogues. Through this programme they aim to reinforce Asia-Europe exchanges with the objective of deepening mutual understanding between cultural communities in the two regions.
