BUY TICKET HERE! !

In times of crisis and the failure of traditional economical systems we can witness an emergence of alternative economies and monetary systems.
No more euros as currency but an exchange of time, values, services, knowledge or products instead.
Examples include Bitcoin, the virtual system and Timebanks, that propose time as currency.
How does these “new” currencies work? And do these initiatives really represent alternatives for “old money”?

“New Currencies? (I lost 50 dollars in a Bitcoin crash but I am still a believer)” is an evening about the design of “new” value systems.
Central questions include: is sharing the new owning, is trust the new currency? And if so, could networked media meet these promises, as a framework for virtual and DIY currencies?

“We are looking more and more at the world through the eyes of a machine. We see like machines can see”. James Bridle

Currently, we are witnessing an expansion of computer aesthetics into the physical environment. Screen and physical world are merging into a hybrid kind of reality through a shared digital language of glitches, pixels or hyperrealism.
James Bridle refers to this way of seeing as the New Aesthetic: it is not what we are looking at but how we are taught to look by technology. How does this affect our relation to the world? And is this really a new phenomenon? ‘Expanded Aesthetics’ focuses on the way artists and designers both contribute to and question this universe remix and how they “code our perception”.
Guests are Sander Veenhof, known for, among others, his augmented reality guerrilla exhibition at the MOMA, NY, fashion designer Jacob Kok, presenting “digital couture” and Geoff Lillemont of Champagne Valentine, exploiting digital aesthetics in advertising, fashion, art and interaction.

Nowadays, we can buy devices and machines of any kind and for almost any purpose, function or deficiency.
However, or maybe because of this, many makers have devoted themselves to developing their own inventions.
Their personal machines, tools and other unique devices allow us to escape the prescriptions of the industry and mass prodcution. ‘Re: inventions’ presents projects that reveal the mariage between design, engineering and inventing.

The integration between internet and physical objects has inspired The Incredible Machine to develop new products: ‘TickToc’ is a reinterpretation of an analogue clock, one that shows your personal Google agenda. ‘CamJam’ is a skateboard environment that registers your moves through RFID and a camera, to be published online.

As a graduation project, Mickael Boulay (Design Academy, 2012) developed an apparatus for diabetes patients. He specifically designed this meter in order to reduce stress with diabetics while measuring their blood. Rational data, like numbers, have been replaced with intuition and tactility; a natural communication with this interface.

Artist Dennis de Bel (WdKA/PZI Media Design) comments in his work upon design consumption. His reinterpretations of familiar products have lead to unexpected, surprising objects like the ‘Vacumonium’, integrating a vacuum cleaner and a harmonium or the ‘Sew-o-Phone’, a combination of a sewing machine and a record player.

As a true uomo unversalis, Eibert Draisma, the moderator of this evening, unites the roles of designer, inventor and artist. Could this be a future scenario for designers?

WHAT
About Unravel The Code
Six graphic design and four fashion students from the Willem de Kooning Academy have worked the last couple of months together in duos, exploring, examining and conducting hands-on research. Throughout the duration of the project a recurring exchange with students of Smart Textiles from the MICA in Baltimore took place by way of arranged virtual meetings.

The overall questions around which the course revolve were:
Is there such a thing as an “information identity” and what are it’s consequences? How can we make the information flow that is encircling our bodies visible?
And can we change behaviour by doing so?
These questions formed a starting point for the Unravel the Code participants to ponder, critically examine and ultimately design prototypes or products for.

On 10 january at 18.00 uur the students will give a presentation of their work. Within their presentations they will give a unique insight in their ideas and design process.
Next to that the final outcomes of the course can be viewed and experienced in the exhibition till 11 january.

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

We live in an era of extreme and intensive information exchange.

Both as broadcasters (Facebook, Twitter etc) and receivers. We’re participators, caught up in the vortex of information glut. This affects our daily habits, our physical appearance (for example various body postures are new, and caused by hunching over our phones, or staring at screens); our psychological state – attention spans are dwindling; the way we relate to (or disconnect from) our immediate physical surroundings.

Information flows – such as mean tweets, prosaic text messages, harsh comments, public transport cards tracking your movements, private emails and many many more – are humming closely around our bodies. Invisible to the naked eye, yet forming part of our “information identity”.

For centuries, our bodies and the way we adorn them, have been a bearer of signs and signifiers, giving clues as to what culture you’re from, what class you belong to, what era you lived in, what music you like etc. What is still relatively new is that our bodies can now also be seen as interfaces that are carrying, processing and even generating information. This has a powerful impact, affecting our behaviour and our relationship with our environment.

The students investigated this notion of “information identity” through the fields of Digital Craft, Dynamic Design and The New Aesthetic.

Come and see how these upcoming talented designers respond to these themes as described above.

‘Data Obsessions: Life as a Database’
